Have you ever stayed in a hotel? Most Chinese hotels often provide guests with things like disposable(一次性的) toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and slippers. Many guests like the idea because they don’t have to bring their own. But, if you travel to Beijing, remember to bring your own things. Starting from June, some hotels in Beijing will no longer provide guests with these disposables. They want to ask people to use less disposable things. Many disposable things are made of plastic. People throw them away after only using them once. It is a waste of nature resources and is very bad for the environment. Do you know, in Chinese person makes as much as 400kg of waste a year! Most of that waste comes from disposable things. In Beijing, people throw away about 19,000 tons of plastic bags and 1,320 tons of plastic lunch bowls every year? Plastic can take between 100 and 400 years to break down. So the less plastic we throw out, the better. So, wherever you travel, bring your own things and use them again and again.

In 1896, the first modern Olympic Games was held in Athens, Greece. Since then many countries have successfully held the Olympics, such as England, France, Germany, Canada, the USA, Spain and Autralia. After more than a century the Games returns to its hometown in the year of 2004. When people hold the Olympic Games, they always make an emblem(会徽).The emblem of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games is a white circle of olive branches in the sky. In 2008, the Olympic Games will be held in Beijing, China. And China has already made a seal (印章) as the emblem of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The character() in the emblem is “Jing”. It means “capital” of China and it is also like a runner or a dancer. The running figure() of the emblem shows the spirit of the Olympics---- faster, higher and stronger.

Parents’ and teachers’ thoughts
A new semester begins. Is anything new at your school? This year,Sichuan schools have a new rule: the first classes begin no earlier than 8:30 am. This will make students get an extra hour to sleep in the morning, and help them fell less tired. Students’ opinions Liu Xian, 15, said his class were excited by the news on the first day of school. “It’s so good that we can get up later!”said Liu. Liu studied in Chengdu No.4 Middle School. He used to get up at 6:40am. Now he can get up at 7:40 because class doesn’t start until 8:40. Wu Hongli, 15, said the new schedule is good for her health. “I used to drink coffee every night, or I would feel too sleepy to finish my homework,” said Wu. “Now I can finish without coffee.” She used to get up at 6:30am. Now she can get up at 7:30am. Parents’ and teachers’ thoughts Wu’s mother was happy too. She thought more sleep would help her daughter grow taller. But some parents worried that more sleep would mean less learning. There used to be five classes in the morning. Now there are only four. Many teachers, however, said the changes would help students learn better. “Students used to be sleepy for the first two classes in the morning,” said Li Zongping, an English teacher. “But now they look energetic and they learn much better than before.”

On October 12, 1989, some Chinese scientists were working at the computers to look for the invention they needed. Suddenly they saw something bright crossing the computers’ screens, and there was so much! At the same moment the computers were working much slower. To find out what was happening they stopped their work to check some parts of the computers. Much to their surprise, they found out that most of their stored information was cleared up by computer viruses (病毒)! What was worse, all these computers had been infected (感染) by computer viruses.
11
It is said that the computer viruses were made by a group of young men who all had good education. They made the viruses just to show their intelligence (才能). These kinds of computer viruses are called Jerusalem Viruses. These viruses can stay in computers for a long time. When the time comes they ill attack the computers by slowing down the function (功能), damaging (破坏) their normal programs or even clearing up all the information. We now come to know that Jerusalem Viruses often attack computers on Friday so they are also called “Friday Viruses” and that they are spreading (传播) to a lot of computers. Among the countries that suffered (遭受) computer viruses are Britain, Australia, Switzerland, the United States of America, and some other countries. But till now, how to clean up the terrible viruses is still a problem.
12
2.Why did the group of young men make the computer viruses?
1.What did the Chinese scientists find out when they checked the computers? They found out that most of their stored information was cleaned up by computer viruses. 通读全文,就会发现答案即在第一段的“Much to their surprise, they found out that most of their stored information was cleared up by computer viruses!” 2.Why did the group of young men make the computer viruses? They made the viruses just to show their intelligence. 3.The computer viruses will damage the normal programs, won’t they? Yes, they will.
13
4.Why are these computer viruses called “Friday Viruses”?
Because they often attack computers on Fridays. Viruses often attack computers on Friday so they are also called ‘Friday Viruses’…” 5.What’s the best title of this passage? Computer Viruses.

They eat 300 pounds of food a day. Please don’t ever buy anything made from ivory. About 70,000wild elephants were killed for ivory each year. Indian elephants are easier to identify because of their smaller ears. They also use their trunks for drinking water, bathing, eating and communicating. 1 A 2 E 3 D 4 C 5 B
