9 Think about it How do you usually travel to some other place?
Who invented the steam engine? When did the first passenger railway open?

10 Who invented the steam engine?
In the 1700s, many inventions were working on the steam engine. In the 1760s, a scientist in England invented a way to put steam engines and wheels together. Soon, people had a new type of transportation: the steam locomotive.

11 What happened to the first steam locomotive?
An English engineer drove the first steam locomotive on a road, but it exploded!

12 Who invented railways? In 1804, a locomotive carried about seven passengers a short distance on some iron rails. It was the first railway! It was in England.

13 When did the first passenger railway open?
The first passenger railway opened in England in the first passenger train was called the Rocket. During the 1830s, countries all over the world started to build railways. After fifty years, railways covered most countries. Many train stations built to make it easier for passengers to get on and off the trains.

14 How fast do trains go? Early trains, like the Rocket, had a top speed of 50 kilometers per hour. Even the best steam locomotives were slow. They could only go about 80 kilometers per hour. Today’s trains are much faster. They travel at about 240 kilometers an hour. The fastest trains can go 380 kilometers an hour.

15 How fast this train is!

16 Who invented the steam engine?
invent vt. 发明 Who first invented the airplane? How many inventions did Edison have in his life? He has invented many things. He is a great inventor.

17 In the 1760s, a scientist in England invented a way to put steam engines and wheels together. My grandma was born in the 1890s.

18 Early trains, like the Rocket, had a top speed of 50 kilometres per hour.
1) a top speed of全速=a full speed of如: He is driving at a top/full speed of 80 kilometres per hour. at a speed of 以…… 如: at a speed of 50 kilometres per hour以每小时50公里的速度 2) per prep. 每, 如 per hour每小时,per people每人, per day每日,per year每年

19 pratice 1、Thomas Edison was one of the famous (发明家) in the world.
inventors engineer 2、An English (工程师)drove the first steam locomotive on a road, but it exploded. passenger 3、The first (乘客) railway opened in England in 1825.
