The Age of Brass Classical poetry Modern poetry (1820)

3 Para.7 Question 5. What the difference between imitative and original? Please cite some relevant samples to describe it. The imitative consists in recasting, and giving an exquisite polish to, the poetry of the age of gold: of this Virgil is the most obvious and striking example. The original is chiefly comic, didactic, or satiric: as in Menander, Aristophanes, Horace, and Juvenal.

Exquisite Utmost[ˈʌtməʊst]

6 7 didactic  He mentioned in his paper the didactic tendency in chinese literature. Satiric  means the same as satirical .

7 7 Fastidious[fæˈstɪdiəs]

Be particularly fastidious about washing your hands before touching food.

8 Publius Vergilius Maro
"Omnia vincit amor; et nos cedamus amori." 《牧歌集Eclogues 》 Protinus aerii mellis caelestia donaexsequar: hanc etiam, Maecenas, adspice partem.

9 Publius Vergilius Maro
"...multosque per annoserrabant acti fatis maria omnia circum. tantae molis erat Romanam condere gentem."

10 Menander  Menander (/məˈnændər/;  c. 341/42– c. 290 BC) was a Greek dramatist and the best-known representative of Athenian New Comedy.[1]  He was the author of more than a hundred comedies, and took the prize at the Lenaia festival eight times.[2]  He who labors diligently need never despair, for all things are accomplished by diligence and labor. He [Caesar] declared in Greek with loud voice to those who were present 'Let the die be cast' and led the army across. (Plutarch, Life of Pompey, )[19]

11 Aristophanes the Father of Comedy the Prince of Ancient Comedy,
Aristophanes (/ˌærɨˈstɒfəniːz/ or /ˌɛrɨˈstɒfəniːz/;[2]  c. 446 – c. 386 BC), a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Playwright and director ofOld Comedy the Father of Comedy  the Prince of Ancient Comedy, The Acharnians, 425 BC The Knights 424 BC The Clouds 423 BC The Wasps 422 BC Peace 421 BC The Birds 414 BC Lysistrata 411 BC Thesmophoriazusae 411 BC The Frogs 405 BC Ecclesiazusae c. 392 BC Wealth II 388 BC Illustration from a bust found near Tusculum†. Eleven of his thirty plays survive virtually complete. These, together with fragments of some of his other plays, provide the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, and they are used to define the genre.[4] Also known as the Father of Comedy[5] and the Prince of Ancient Comedy,[6] Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author.[7]

12 Aristophanes People among us, and I don't mean the polis,Remember this — I don't mean the polis -But wicked little men of a counterfeit kind.... How many are the things that vex my heart! Pleasures are few, so very few — just four -But stressful things are manys and thousands and heaps![74] VERB If someone or somethingvexes you, they make you feel annoyed, puzzled, and frustrated. It vexed me to think of others gossiping behind my back...

15 Para.8 Question 6. In the silver age, the state of poetry is towards its extinction, why? Do you agree with the writer’s ideas? Poetry consists in passion and language. It is impossible to express the reason and truth by the way of poetry. Question 9. For these four ages of the classical poetry, which one put more emphasis on reason and moral? The silver age of poetry.

16 8 Tangible Assent Severity[sɪ‘verətɪ] Palatable[ˈpælətəbl] Ascendancy

17 8 Euclid欧几里得 (/ˈjuːklɪd/;   fl. 300 BC), also known as Euclid of Alexandria, was a Greek mathematician, often referred to as the "Father of Geometry".  "Euclid" is the anglicized version of the Greek name

18 8 unvarnished, Assure to install an entrance formerly, unvarnished, do not have any face-lifting. severity --you do not like its plain appearance and lack of decoration When women started working in offices, they opted for severity in dress in order to imply sobriety. Several drugs are used to lessen the severity of the symptoms.

19 8 palatable, 2.ADJ-GRADED(想法、方法等)合意的,可接受的 you mean that people are willing to accept it. ...a palatable way of sacking staff... ...flavourings and preservatives, designed to make the food look more palatable.

If one group has ascendancy over another group, it has more power or influence than the other group.  The extremists are gaining ascendancy. Although geographically linked, the two provinces have long fought for political ascendancy...

23 Para 9 Withdraw Contemporary Ray Dissipate [ˈdɪsɪpeɪt]
He wound down the windows to dissipate the heat. The tension in the room had dissipated...

25 Para. 10 Question 7. What is the most typical characteristic of the age of brass? The brass age, by rejecting the polish and the learning of the age of silver, and taking a retrograde stride to the barbarisms and erude traditions of the age of iron, professes to return to nature and revive the age of gold. This is the second childhood of poetry. Question 8. “The age of brass is the second childhood of poetry” is mentioned in the text, which one is the first, and why? The iron age of poetry.

26 Question10. What do you know about the modern poetry? Please elaborate on it via your favorite poetry. The modern poetry has free lyric formats, diverse motif, and more emphasis on the application of the rhetoric. More poets investigate the human condition, and writes poems that are deeply moving and at the same time readily accessible

32 Nonnus Nonnus of Panopolis (/ˈnɒnəs/ was a Greek epic poet. probably lived at the end of the 4th or in the 5th century. the composer of the Dionysiaca, an epic tale of the god Dionysus, the Metabole, a paraphrase of the Gospel of John. A mosaic of Dionysus from Antioch. A mosaic of Dionysus from Antioch.

33 Nonnus Nonnus' principal work is the Dionysiaca狄奥尼西卡, an epic in 48 books, the longest surviving poem from antiquity at 20,426 lines, composed inHomeric dialect and dactylic hexameters, the main subject of which is the life of Dionysus, his expedition to India, and his triumphant return to the west. The poem is thought to have been written in the early 5th century.

34 DIONYSIACA CONTENTS BOOK 9
Birth & Fostering of Dionysus Madness of Ino BOOK 10 Madness of Athamas Love of Dionysus & Ampelus BOOK 11 Death of Ampelus Love of Calamus & Carpus BOOK 12 Tablets of Phanes Discovery of Wine BOOK 13 Human Army of Dionysus BOOK 14 Divine Army of Dionysus BOOKS BOOK 1 Love of Zeus & Europa Typhoeus & Cadmus BOOK 2 Battle of Zeus & Typhoeus BOOK 3 Cadmus on Samothrace BOOK 4 Winning of Harmonia The Founding of Thebes BOOK 5 Wedding of Harmonia Death of Actaeon BOOK 6 Birth & Death of Zagreus The Great Deluge BOOK 7 Love of Zeus & Semele BOOK 8 Death of Semele

35 DIONYSIACA, BOOK I The first contains Cronion, light-bearing ravisher of the nymph, and the starry heaven battered by Typhon’s hands. [1] Tell the tale, Goddess, of Cronides’ courier with fiery flame, the gasping travail which the thunderbolt brought with sparks for wedding-torches, the lightning in waiting upon Semele’s nuptials; tell the naissance of Bacchos twice-born, whom Zeus lifted still moist from the fire, a baby half-complete born without midwife; how with shrinking hands he cut the incision in his thigh and carried him in his man’s womb, father and gracious mother at once – and well he remembered another birth, when his own head conceived, when his temple was big with child, and he carried that incredible unbegotten lump, until he shot out Athena scintillating in her armour.

37 Para 11 rue[英][ru:] vt.
If you rue something that you have done, you are sorry that you did it, because it has had unpleasant results.  Tavare was probably ruing his decision. You'll live to rue the day you said that to me, my girl.

I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud I wandered lonely as a cloud
I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o’er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
