Unit Three Why I Teach 本文摘自《校友杂志联盟》(Alumni Magazine Consortium),1984 年11月出版。作者为Peter G. Geidler,美国宾西法尼亚州 Lehigh 大学的英语教授。他于 1983年被教育促进委员会(the Council for Advancement and Support of Education) 授予年度教授称号。
Unit Three Why I Teach 背景知识 爱默生、梭洛与赫胥黎 R.W.爱默生(Ralpj Wa ldo Emerson,1803~1882),美国著名的哲学家、散文家及诗人。在他有生之年, 他被认为是美国最出色的作家之一。也是当时美国文学界最有影响力的人物。其代表作有《自然》( Nature ) 、<<美国学者>> (The American Scholar)。这两部作品在美国文学史上占有极其重要的地位。
Unit Three Why I Teach H.D.梭洛(Henry David Thoreau, 1817~1862),美国作家、自然主义者。他1837 年毕业于哈佛大学。1845年,他在Walden Pond 建了一座小木屋,在那儿生活到1847 年。1854年他出版了代表作〈华尔顿林中生涯〉,在书中他详细记载了林中的生活,生动地描绘了四季的变化及其他的自然事件。
Unit Three Why I Teach A.L.赫胥黎( Aldus Leonard Huxley, 1894~1963),英国小说家、散文家。在他的后期作品中,他表达了这样一种关注,即人们对物质生活的追求是以牺牲自己和对自然的尊敬为代价的。在其代表作〈勇敢的新世界〉(Brave New World)中,他对人们的这种倾向进行了讽刺。在1962年出版的另一部力作 〈岛屿〉(Island)中,他呈现给读者一个乌托邦社会,其中人们与自然和谐地共存。

Introductory Remarks 课文概要 Why I Teach Introductory Remarks 课文概要 Teaching has been considered an undesirable profession in many parts of the world.Education may be respected and highly valued, but teachers are not. Their pay and prestige are low in most countries. They work long hours both during the day and in the evening and their hard work often goes unnoticed and unappreciated.
Why I Teach Yet,there have always been people who love the teaching profession and choose teaching as their life-long career. Here, Mr Beidler, Professor of English in Pennsylvania,U.S.A.,gives his reasons why he teaches.
Why I Teach In this article, Mr. Beidler gives his reasons for choosing teaching as his career. Ask the students to go over the whole text very quickly and find out those reasons.

Translation 翻译 I teach because I like the pace of the academic calendar. June,July, and August offer an opportunity for reflection research,and writing. I teach because teaching is a profession built on change. When the material is the same, I change---and, more important, my students change. I teach because I like the freedom to make my own mistakes, to learn my own lessons, to stimulate myself and my students. As a teacher, I’m my own boss. If I want my freshmen to learn to write by creating their own textbook,who is to say I can’t ? Such courses may be huge failures, but we can all learn from failures.
