Background Information Unit 7 Socialising Text A Background Information Dixie Chicks

Unit 7 Socialising Text A Translation Everyone makes mistakes, and some of them are really embarrassing. Have you ever put your foot in it? TEXT A

Watch What You Say! Text A Translation Unit 7 Socialising Text A Translation Watch What You Say! 1 We have probably all had moments when we have said the wrong thing. There was the time at university when I met a friend in a coffee bar after class and immediately started complaining about our tutor, who was called Dr Gray. I was going on and on about how miserable she was —strict, boring, unfriendly — and my friend wasn’t really saying much. After a minute or two, she interrupted me and said, “Um, I think I should introduce you.” She then turned to this other student who I hadn’t really noticed up till then and said, “This is Tracy. Tracy Gray”!

Unit 7 Socialising Text A Translation 2 Fortunately, the result of putting my foot in it was only an awkward moment. Maybe my friends thought a little less of me, maybe they thought I was a fool, but no real harm was done. The same is not true for everyone.

Unit 7 Socialising Text A Translation 3 Take Gerald Ratner. He was the owner of a chain of shops that sold cheap jewellery. In a semi-private meeting with some fellow businessmen, he joked about the quality of some of his products. He said some products were “cheaper than a sandwich, but probably wouldn’t last as long”. Unsurprisingly, when his customers heard about the jokes they didn’t see the funny side and the share price of the company crashed. Shortly after that the company was taken over by a rival.

Unit 7 Socialising Text A Translation 4 In some ways, Ratner could be seen as a victim of a globalised, 24-hour news culture. He was with people he was at ease with — you could even call them friends. However, there just happened to be a journalist there and soon his comments were being broadcast around the country and then the whole world.

Unit 7 Socialising Text A Translation 5 These days, people in the public eye have to be careful about every single thing they say or do — even when they are miles away from home. The Dixie Chicks, who were the most popular band in America at the time, lost millions of dollars in sales because of a casual remark they made about the US President, George Bush. While on tour in the UK, they said that the Iraq war had made them feel ashamed to come from the same state as the President — Texas. A comment, which would have passed unnoticed in previous times, was heard by their fans back in the States. They saw it as unpatriotic and stopped buying the band’s records in protest.

Unit 7 Socialising Translation 6 Such incidents can damage relationships between people and even destroy business deals and careers. All I can say is that you need to watch what you say!

Party Animals Text B Translation Unit 7 Socialising Translation Party Animals 1 A long-awaited coming of age party turned into a nightmare when hundreds of teenagers rushed into a family home in the suburbs of the city. Invitations had gone out to about 50 friends to a fancy-dress party at Maddie Clarke’s four-storey house in a residential area of the city, but ten times that number turned up when the party was advertised on the social networking site Facebook.

Text B Unit 7 Socialising Translation 2 Maddie’s mother, Janet Clarke, described the droves of teenagers who seemed to arrive out of nowhere, “It was terrible. By midnight the house and garden were packed with people. We’d asked two or three friends to help us, because we thought there might be some gatecrashers, but we didn’t have a clue that hundreds would turn up. We couldn’t do anything to stop them.”

Text B Unit 7 Socialising Translation 3 We thought we had everything under control,” added Mike Clarke, Maddie’s father. “Maddie had been given a strict limit of numbers. She’d designed the invitations herself and sent them via email, so we thought we knew exactly who was on the list. Then, without any warning, she posted the details on her Facebook page the day before the party. So, the information just spread. Within hours, half the city knew about it. ”

Unit 7 Socialising Text B Translation 4 The family had just finished decorating their property and laying out the garden but now complain of extensive damage. “By the time we’d got rid of everyone, the place looked more like a crime scene than a family home, ” Mrs Clarke said. “There was mud trodden right through the house, broken windows and cigarette burns on the furniture, and plants uprooted around the garden. I’d never seen anything like it. And the number of empty bottles was incredible. I found out later that the gatecrashers had been stopping off at the local supermarket to buy vodka and cider. ”

Unit 7 Socialising Translation 5 A neighbour called the police at about 11.30 to complain about the noise and number of teenagers hanging around near the property. A police officer who attended the scene said, “When we arrived there were teenagers still turning up and passing on the address. It took us over an hour to clear the house. I feel really sorry for the family. They tried to do the right thing, but things got out of their control. But they’re not the only victims – this cyber-gatecrashing is a growing phenomenon across the world. ”

Unit 7 Socialising Translation 6 No arrests were made but the family have been very shaken up by their experience. Maddie burst out crying when she realized her party was turning into a disaster. “I just couldn’t believe all these strangers were invading my party and creating damage. I still feel really bad about the whole thing,” she said. “I can’t stop saying sorry to mum and dad. I just wish I’d never had a party. I didn’t think putting the information on Facebook would have such a knock-on effect. I don’t think I’ll be bothering with social networking sites again.”

Text

Text

Text

Text

Text

Text

Text

Text

Text

Text

Text

Wu Shan: By the way, I noticed that one of your guys was 5_____________ on the spot. Can you email me my photos? How about taking photos

Unit 7 Socialising Practical Speaking Nancy: Yes, my colleague 6___________ was responsible for taking photos. I’ll ask him to send yours as soon as possible. Wu Shan: 7________________. Nancy: You’re welcome. When are you leaving tomorrow? Wu Shan: Well, I’ve booked the 10 a.m. flight. Congratulations again on the successful conference! Nancy: Thank you. And I wish you 8________________. Carter Thank you a nice journey

Listening & Speaking 7.4 M: Tomorrow is your birthday, isn’t it? Unit 7 Socialising Listening & Speaking 1. Arranging to Meet 7.4 M: Tomorrow is your birthday, isn’t it? W: Yeah, but I have exams to take. By four o’clock Friday we’ll have finished all the exams. I can’t wait! M: So how about going out and celebrating your birthday on Friday, then? W: That sounds like an excellent idea. Do you have anywhere in mind? M: I thought that Equinox might be fun. Next Page

Listening & Speaking 7.4 W: Where’s that? Unit 7 Socialising Listening & Speaking 1. Arranging to Meet 7.4 W: Where’s that? M: Oh, don’t you know it? It’s the big disco on the main square in town. It’s great. W: If you like that kind of place! I have to say, it’s not my kind of thing. I can’t stand the music down there and besides – it’s full of horrible guys. Can we make it somewhere less noisy? M: Oh! I thought it was OK when I went there, but if you’d rather go somewhere else, that’s fine by me. Exercise

Unit 7 Socialising Listening & Speaking 1. Arranging to Meet 7.5 W: Well, personally, I’d quite like to get something to eat at some point, if that’s all right with you. M: Yeah, that sounds good. Any thoughts on where? W: Well, do you fancy eating at Rico’s? M: Oh, it’s so expensive. Last time I went there, I spent something like sixty euros. Can’t we go somewhere cheaper? W: How about that Brazilian place near the station? M: Guanabara? Yeah, that’d be fine with me. They have music later on down there, don’t they? W: Yeah, they have music after ten. Next Page

Unit 7 Socialising Listening & Speaking 1. Arranging to Meet 7.5 M: It sounds ideal. So what time do you want to meet? Shall we meet at seven? W: I’m working till six and it’d be nice if I could go home first, so could we make it a bit later, about eight? I’ll have had time to change my clothes and put on some make-up by then. M: Yeah, fine. And I’ll phone and book a table. W: OK. I’ll ring a few other people and see if anyone else is up for it. Would it be OK to meet you in Guanabara? M: OK. Brilliant. Bye. W: Bye. Exercise

Listening & Speaking 7.6 W: Hello. Unit 7 Socialising Listening & Speaking 2. Caring About Others 7.6 W: Hello. M: Oh, hi, Michelle. It’s me, Joop. Listen, I’m just ringing to say we’re not coming later. Kate isn’t feeling very well. W: Oh dear. What’s up? M: She actually fainted this morning while we were out. W: You’re joking! M: No. We were in a shop and she suddenly had a dizzy spell and then she just passed out. Next Page

Listening & Speaking 7.6 W: Oh no! Is she all right now? Unit 7 Socialising Listening & Speaking 2. Caring About Others 7.6 W: Oh no! Is she all right now? M: Yeah, she recovered quite quickly. W: It’s not this flu that’s going round, isn’t it? One of my colleagues had it recently and said it left him quite faint. M: No, I don’t think so. I think it’s because she has been under a lot of pressure at work recently. W: Well, maybe all she needs is a break. Anyway, send her my love and tell her I’m thinking of her. Exercise

Listening & Speaking 7.7 M: Hello. Unit 7 Socialising Listening & Speaking 2. Caring About Others Next Page 7.7 M: Hello. W: Hello. Nick? Hi. It’s me, Caitlin. M: Hi! Where are you? I was expecting you at 6. W: Yeah, sorry, but Lucas had some kind of reaction to something he ate. We’re in Rome Hospital. M: You’re joking! Is he all right? W: Yes, yes. He’s fine now. He’s with the nurse and they’re running some tests. M: No! What happened? W: Well, we were in the middle of lunch and he suddenly said he was feeling funny – that he was a bit short of breath – and then I noticed there were spots breaking out all round his mouth. Then his lips just started swelling up and he was really struggling to breathe.

Unit 7 Socialising Listening & Speaking 2. Caring About Others 7.7 M: That sounds terrifying. He is all right now, though? W: Yes, yes, honestly. We rushed him to the hospital – someone from the restaurant actually took us – and they dealt with him very quickly. M: Oh Caitlin. You sound so calm. It must’ve been awful. W: Well, I wasn’t at the time, but everyone’s been so good to us. Anyway, listen, they’re going to keep him in overnight – to be on the safe side. M: Oh, right. W: Sorry. I know we’re supposed to be going to the concert tonight. M: Don’t be silly! Lucas’ health is much more important than a concert. Give him a hug from me. Exercise

Unit 7 Socialising Listening & Speaking 3. Parties Exercise 7.9 M: It’s Lucy’s 30th soon. I’m thinking of throwing a surprise party for her. What do you think? W: Nice idea, but make sure you get accurate numbers of guests. I went to one last year and it was a bit of a disaster. They spent a fortune on all the preparations — you know, hiring a band, setting up a marquee, ordering loads of food. It all looked beautiful but not many people came and most of the food went to waste. But a few of the guys there were drinking quite a lot and they got argumentative. Then it got a bit out of hand and two of them started fighting. My boyfriend had to break it up and calm everyone down. Then his cousin, whose party it was, burst into tears. The poor girl looked so sad and shocked. M: Sounds awful. I think I might take Lucy away somewhere and then just have a small get-together with friends.
