writing Theme: favorite Chinese festival

Your English-speaking pen pal wants to know about your favorite Chinese festival. Discuss in groups and make some notes about the festival. What is the name of the festival? When is it? What do people eat? What do people do? Why do you like it so much?

Write a letter to your pen pal and tell him/ her about your favorite Chinese festival. In your letter: First, introduce the festival and when it is celebrated. My favorite Chinese festival is… It is celebrated in/on … Then talk about what people do and eat. During this festival, people… Finally, explain why you like it best and how it makes you feel. It’s my favorite festival because… It makes me feel…

Sample writing: My favorite Chinese festival is the Spring Festival. It is celebrated on the first day of the Chinese lunar calendar. Before the festival, our houses have to be cleaned and we need to buy new clothes for a new year’s coming. On the eve, my family goes to my grandparents’ home for a reunion dinner. Our family usually has jiaozi, fish, niangao and a great many dishes.

On the first day of our new year, people wear their new clothes and visit family and friends. Children will receive red packets filled with “lucky” money. That’s one of my favorite parts of this festival. It’s my favorite festival because I enjoy spending time with my relatives. It makes me feel very happy and I love to be with my family!
