活出聖靈的果子 Live Out the Fruit of the Spirit 加 Gal 5:16-26 黃鴻興牧師 Rev. Hing Wong
16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. 17 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. 19 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self- control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
1. We should Recognize our inner frustration 一。當承認內心的苦悶 17 因為情慾和聖靈相爭,聖靈和情慾相爭,這兩個是 彼此相敵,使你們不能做所願意做的。 17 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. (5:17) The Spirit and the flesh stand in opposition to each other, so neither the desires of the flesh nor the desires of the Spirit are actualized. Even though Christians enjoy the life of the age to come through the Holy Spirit, a battle with the flesh remains. The flesh and the Spirit vie against one another constantly so that temptations continue to harass believers.12 12 Martyn limits what Paul says to only some of the Galatians, to those who have submitted to the message of the agitators (Galatians, 495, 540), but this is improbable. There is no evidence that Paul restricts his remarks here to only some of the Galatians. Thomas R. Schreiner, Galatians, Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2010), 343–344. First, there is the picture in which Paul presents Christ’s cross not as defeat, but rather as victory over the curse of the Law (3:13). Second, there is the picture in which Paul portrays, in promissory form, the victory of the Spirit over the Flesh (5:16). And third, there is Paul’s portrayal of the church’s participation in the Spirit’s victorious war against the Flesh (5:16–23). Bringing these pictures together, Paul now says that the superior power in that war can be identified not only as the Spirit but also as the cross. The church, that is to say, participates victoriously in the Spirit’s apocalyptic war by participating in the victorious cross of Christ. Several dimensions of this new vista are striking. J. Louis Martyn, Galatians: A New Translation with Introduction and Commentary, vol. 33A, Anchor Yale Bible (New Haven; London: Yale University Press, 2008), 500.

3. We should Live in the Power of the Spirit 三。當依靠聖靈的大能 Be crucified with Christ 「把肉體…同釘在十字架上」(5:24) 5:25 stoichômen, “let us carry out our daily lives” 5:26 mê ginômetha kenodoxoi, “do not think of yourself as better” 6:1 katartizete, “restore” 6:2 bastazete, “bear (one another’s burdens)” 6:4 dokimazetô, “consider” 6:6 koinôneitô, “share goods” 6:7 mê planasthe, “do not be deceived” 6:9 mê egkakômen, “do not become weary (in doing the right thing)” 6:10 ergazômetha, “let us work.” J. Louis Martyn, Galatians: A New Translation with Introduction and Commentary, vol. 33A, Anchor Yale Bible (New Haven; London: Yale University Press, 2008), 541–542. Paul’s choice of the term στοιχέω (”follow”) is certainly intentional,12 although we can interpret its meaning in several ways. After ἐξάρχομαι (“begin”) 3:3*, περιπατέω (”walk”) 5:16*, ἄγομαι (be carried away”) 5:18*, he now seems to borrow a military term (“be drawn up in line”).13 If this is the meaning, Paul would be calling upon the Christians of Galatia to all march in line following the Spirit as the leader. The term is used in this sense by Hellenistic philosophers to mean “follow someone’s philosophical principles.”14 Another possibility is the meaning “conform” (“agree,” “act in harmony”).15 The difference between these may not be great, but “follow” places the accent upon the priority of the Spirit as well as upon concrete ethical behavior.16 12 Paul uses the same term again in the summary of his ethic 6:16*.
