Washrooms are just around the corner near the library Please turn off phones (we will provide a soft copy of the presentation if you want it) Feel free to ask questions any time

Science in our everyday lives (hands-on activities)生活中的科学(动手实验) Parent support(家长支持) Resources(资源分享)

4 Elephant toothpaste
Turn to the person next to you and 转向你身边的人 1. Make three observations:做三个观察 (something you use your five senses for: see, smell, taste, touch, hear)看,闻,尝,碰,听 2. List two safety precautions that were taken 3. Identify two pieces of scientific equipment used 识别两个使用的科学仪器

Science is a collection of facts
Science is both a body of knowledge and the process for building that knowledge

6 Science: hands-on learning
Science is about what you do and how you think, as well as what you know.

8 For example, in a unit about electricity, a student asked about batteries. The teacher gave the child a book about batteries. In this book, there was an experiment. The child brought it home and did the experiment. Then another and another and another. The parent provided the materials. He asked question upon question. He questioned his mistakes. He questioned what if there were more lemons. He questioned what the voltage of a lemon was. He would not have been able to learn or retain this much material if it was teacher/parent driven. It all started with a child being curious about something and lead to so much scientific learning.

9 Science Activities
Please rotate through the various stations:请在不同桌依次做实验 pH (cabbage indicator)白菜指示 Liquid stacking (density)液体叠加 Motion sensor运动传感器

10 Science in everyday life
Use your child’s questions and wonderings as a platform for the child to learn and become interested in science.

11 Why does it look like my cup is sweating?
Why does it look like my cup is sweating? Why does that rock look like it has lines in it? Use your child’s questions and wonderings as a platform for the child to learn and become interested in science. Why does my bruise turn purple and then yellow?

Provide them the tool and the materials to be able to inquire further and answer their questions.

14 Resources 资源分享 pHET Computer simulations of science experiments from the University of Colorado 电脑模拟的科学实验。 Learn Genetics Information, simulations, games and more on the topics of cell biology, ecology and genetics from the University of Utah, Health sciences Khan Academy Free practice exercises, instructional videos and personalized learning dashboard. They partner with institutions like NASA, The California Academy of Sciences and MIT among others General Chemistry Websites

15 Questions? 问题?
