3 Unit1 Introduction of robot Part3 About industrial robot Definition and application An industrial robot is a robot system used for manufacturing. Industrial robot is defined as "an automatically controlled, reprogrammable, multipurpose, manipulator programmable in three or more axes, which may be either fixed in place or mobile for use in industrial automation applications." in ISO 8373. The Robotics Institute of America (RIA) defines a robot as: A re-programmable multi-functional manipulator designed to move materials, parts, tools, or specialized devices through variable programmed motions for the performance of a variety of tasks.

3 Unit1 Introduction of robot Part3 About industrial robot Definition and application Industrial robot is helpful in material handing and provide interfaces. Typical applications of robots include welding, painting, assembly, pick and place for PCB, packaging, labeling, palletizing, inspection, and testing; all accomplished with high endurance, speed, and precision.

It was used on a production line in the General Motors Corporation in 1961, It was used to lift red-hot door handles and other such car parts from die casting machines and stack them, in an factory in New Jersey, USA. So the Figure 1-4 The first Industrial Robot , Unimate first Unimate was a materials handling robot. Its most distinctive feature was a gripper that eliminated the need for man to touch car parts just made from molten metal.

3 Unit1 Introduction of robot Part3 About industrial robot History of Industrial robot The robot was soon followed by robots for welding and other applications, which undertook the job of transporting die castings from an assembly line and welding these parts on auto bodies, a dangerous task for workers, who might be poisoned by toxic fumes or lose a limb if they were not careful.

3 Unit1 Introduction of robot Part3 About industrial robot Commercial industrial robots In 1962,AMF Corporation produced the Verstran robot, which became commercial industrial robots, as well as Unimate, and exported to countries around the world, setting off a robot boom worldwide. Around 1970s, many company starts their robotic business and create their first industrial robot. Such as Nachi, KUKA, Fanuc, Yaskawa, ASEA(predecessor of ABB), OTC.

3 Unit1 Introduction of robot Part3 About industrial robot Commercial industrial robots 1978: Unimation creates the PUMA (Programmable Universal Machine for Assembly) robot with support from General Motors , as shown in Figure 1-4. PUMA is still work in the production, many research of an industrial robot are based on the robot model and object. Figure 1-5 PUMA robot

3 Unit1 Introduction of robot Part3 About industrial robot Commercial industrial robots 1979: OTC was originally a supplier of welding equipment, they expanded to become a provider to the Japanese auto market of GMAW supplies. Later, OTC Japan introduced its first generation of dedicated arc welding robots. 1980: The industrial robot industry starts its rapid growth, with a new robot or company entering the market every month.
