A Love Story and the Agony and Power of Love

What is love? (Diotima’s Argument) 1. love as love of something(sth.) 2. love as desire sth. 3. love as desire to possess sth. 4. ‘desire’ implies lack of that sth. 5. love as desire to always possess sth. 6. that sth. must be beautiful 7. that sth. must be good (for your happy life) 8. Conclusion: love as desire to always possess sth. good

What is a good? (美善的事物) 任何吸引你(attractive)，你選擇追求的東西。你追求某件good的目的是為了自己，為了美好的活著(living well)，為了快樂，為了擁有一個蓬勃的生命(a flourishing life)。 (Question:服從道德義務是追求good嗎？)

我們可以把good區分成三種 我們追求的good可以分成三種 instrumental good 你選擇擁有它，不是「為了它本身」，而是為了「它帶來的其他好處」。比如說：醫藥、金錢。 intrinsic good  你選擇擁有它，不是因為你「它帶來的其他好處」，而因為你「為了它本身」(for its own sake)，擁有它本身就快樂。 比如說：從事發揮自己卓越能力的活動、做一個公正和勇敢的公民。 intrinsic and instrumental good 你選擇擁有它，不僅是「為了它本身」，而且為了它「它帶來的其他好處」。能思考、能看、能聽、健康。

Eudaimonia （Full Happiness） The highest human good. It is an complete and comprehensive end, including all types of good you need, and most self-sufficient. also as: living well, a happy life, a flourishing life (Different from ‘pleasure’)

The Experience of Self-Creation in Love 1. 遇到深感美麗的事物，想要生產美好的事物 2. 想要從自己身上，再生產（創作）出新的自己。 3. 這個作品會比我的生命存在更久。 4. 這個作品代表了最深的自己，帶有我的身份印記。 5. 這個作品反映了我對該美麗事物的美好最深的感動。作品的持久存在，意味著不朽的我永遠和該美麗的事物在一起。 6.這個作品觸發我了解到更統一、更和諧、更廣闊的美。我的愛獲得了治療、轉變和提昇。

「愛的上昇」前，Diotima給她準備的兩個對愛的認識: (1)她渴求他的，是他身上美善的部分，這和她對人生其他美善事物的渴求，都是同一類型的追求，都是為了完成她自己的美好、快樂生命。 (2)愛會想永久的佔有該美善的事物，可是人類並非不死。在遇到美麗事物時，人會想要從自己身上「創造」出某種東西來，有自己的印記(我是誰)在上面，讓自己死後可以繼續存在。在某個意義上，讓該美善事物永遠是自己的。(名聲、小孩、文字創作、工藝作品、給予城邦法律等等)

The Beautiful itself eternal unconditional (not relative to respects, time, standards, places, persons) 3. existing on its own (not as that embodied in other things, branches, parts) 4. all other beautiful things partake of it and share its beauty 5. invariable (pure, simple)

她最後瞭解到 1.從一開始，她投入追求的就是他身上美好的部分，而不是他的全部。 2.自始至終，她愛的都是世界所有的美善，以及這些美善的合一性。為了她自己的最美好生活。 3.她所有對他愛，最終都是為了超越他，最後能看到美善本身發出的光芒。 4.她的愛變得更穩定、更少依賴、更滿足、更遼闊、更完全。
