昨天我看了一个电影。 我们明天吃了晚饭，去看电影，怎么样？ “了” indicates the completion of an action or event; The use of “了” should not be viewed as an equivalent to the past tense in English. 我们明天吃了晚饭，去看电影，怎么样？ When “了” is used between the verb and the object, the object is often modified by the « Numeral + measure word » 我今天喝了三杯咖啡。 Prof. Ling-Ling Shih, Bard High School Early College

The adverb 才 (cái) ‘not until’ 才 indicates that the occurrence of an action or situation is later than the speaker may have expected。 I did not eat dinner until 9:00. 他晚上九点才吃晩饭。 你昨天几点吃晚饭？ Prof. Ling-Ling Shih, Bard High School Early College
